A few years ago, a movie released under the name Joker that has gained a cult following. First of all, the name is not unusual for Tamil films—it was first seen in Kamal Haasan’s 1986 film. The word "joker" refers to the male protagonist of this particular story whose life is not nearly as glamorous as people might expect. This man has lost everything because of his criminal lifestyle and works at an honest job where he can earn enough money to put food on his family’s table (they are quite large). With no loved ones left in his life, one day he finds himself meeting an old acquaintance who gives him some exciting news—he begins to taste hope again. The story takes on a more serious tone when the character learns of the ordeals of his family. The introduction of his loving wife, who had committed suicide upon hearing about her husband’s death, puts a damper on the jovial tone of this flick. So does the sad life of his children who are being raised by their grandmother due to their mother’s death. The movie then proceeds into darker territory with its depiction of gang rivalry illustrated by some ruthlessly violent yet entertaining set pieces. This part is seen through the eyes of an old man unaware that he is being watched by gang members looking for fresh meat to punish for some misdeed they think he committed (he didn’t). The film ends with those events and how those particular characters—the old man and the joker—are connected. Joker is a raw and hard-hitting look at family relationships. The film depicts these themes very maturely, where a wife wakes up one morning to find her husband’s white shirt on the floor of their bedroom, prompting an ominous message that reads: "Dear Wife, I have gone." An unnamed woman is shown sitting alone on a yellow couch in a tiny apartment with an empty bottle of alcohol beside her. One can infer from this scene that she may have been raped or otherwise been intimately violated by her husband. When her son comes home, the father is nowhere to be found, setting into motion a chain of events that lead to his discovery. This scene starkly depicts the powerlessness of the woman, but her pain remains for all who are willing to see it. Meanwhile, Joker’s younger son works at a video shop while his older brother is an amateur stand-up comic. When he meets an American girl while she is on her vacation in India, they eventually get married and begin a happy life together until she begins having trouble conceiving. The husband says he was reluctant at first because he had just returned from jail after serving time for murder charges. This discussion takes place at breakfast where he tells his wife that the murder victim was the son of an Indian politician, which lands him in jail. This is Joker’s younger son’s girlfriend. That evening, his wife is attacked by the same gang members who had expected to find her husband at home. She tells her husband that they do not need to be married for him to give her a child because she already knows she is pregnant with their child. Her pregnancy also forces Joker into taking a hard look at his past deeds and consider how it may affect his future relationships with family.
